Thanks to all of you WAG Rescue has rescued and adopted out over 200 dogs and returned over 100 lost dogs to their owners. Your generous donations of time and money have made the difference in the lives of these dogs.  We have been able to gain traction as a new non profit and had the resources to care for several dogs with critical care needs.  Sadly, we are discovering that many dogs coming into our system have major health issues due to neglect.  Most are treatable, but typically at great expense plus they are in the system much longer while they recuperate.

All of our dogs receive a veterinary exam, heartworm and intestinal parasite testing and vaccinations. Each of the dogs adopted are vaccinated, spayed/neutered (age appropriate) and micro chipped.  Thank you to the Wimberley Veterinary Clinic, the Cypress Creek Veterinary Hospital and Four Paws for their vital support of our rescue and adoption efforts.

We have treated 17 WAG Rescue dogs for heartworms. We utilize Emancipet for spay/neuter for our healthy dogs.  The mobile clinic comes to Wimberley monthly and we have negotiated discounted rates with them to perform these surgeries.  WAG Rescue is also providing no cost vouchers through Emancipet to people in our community who don’t have the financial means to sterilize their dog.

WAG Rescue continues to be a resource for lost and found pets for the community.  We get calls almost daily and post the information on several websites and in local newspapers.  We have helped return over 100 dogs to their owners.  Statistically, 95% of the dogs we receive into our system are found dogs that owners never claim.  After a minimum ten day waiting period if we do not find the owner these dogs are then put up for adoption.

In April of 2011, we opened our consignment/retail store, Treasures on Twelve.  We continue to receive generous donations of quality items for our store as well as consigned items.  Read more about our store...

It is very important to us that you know how grateful we are to everyone who has helped us.  Our volunteers have worked hard this year, from our foster families to helping at our adoption days to working at our store.  Without them we could not do what we do.

WAG Rescue has a projected operating budget for 2012 of $78,000. Oue goal is to rescue and adopt out 120 dogs this year.  The average cost to receive a dog is $175 and foster care is $75 to $300 depending on the dog's needs and health status. Our healthy dogs stay in our system on average 52 days. Dogs coming to us with serious medical problems such as heartworms are very expensive to treat and the dogs stay in our system at least 4  months. There are also dogs we have rescued who may never be adopted due to age or illness.  WAG Rescue will continue to care for these dogs and thankfully we have wonderful foster families that have given these dogs a home for life. Upon arrival each dog is examined by a Veterinarian and brought current on vaccinations and tested for heartworms and intestinal parasites.  Heartworm positve dogs will be treated.  WAG Rescue will also have the dog spayed or neutered and microchipped.

Although we receive $75 to $125 for each adoption, by the time we take them to our veterinarians for examination, tests and shots to make sure they are healthy, and pay for monthly food and preventive medication, and boarding we find the adoption amount does not recoup our costs. We are just so happy to be able to have the dogs go to a loving and good home.

Right now our main focus is on the Operating Budget and filling that void will give us the security to help all the dogs we must take in. This goal is first and foremost in fulfilling the dream of Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue, to adopt out a healthy, happy dog to a loving forever home.

Please consider helping us with a donation to our Operating Budget so we can continue helping the abandoned and neglected dogs in the Wimberley Community.  By donating, you are helping to ensure that WAG Rescue can continue our mission and care for these dogs that have nowhere else to turn in their need and suffering.

Thank you for caring about homeless dogs.

Milo Fund This fund is named for Milo, a 5 year old Basset Hound. Like many dogs that come to WAG Rescue in our rural community, Milo was a victim of dog dumping and gross neglect.  When we received the call about Milo we were told he seemed sick.  That ended up being an understatement.  Milo had every intestinal parasite, including whip worms, heartworm positive, 15 pounds underweight, and a GI system so bad that it took 3 months to control the diarrhea. Milo’s foster Mom cared for him like her own.  There were a lot of visits to the Vet, multiple medications and a special diet.  He responded well to the medical care, but even better to the love and attention. Milo underwent heartworm treatment at Animal Trustees of Austin. This is an absolutely horrible experience for a dog, with multiple injections of a poison into the muscles on either side of the spine.  He was in extreme pain for several days.   No dog should have to suffer from heartworms when it is so easy to prevent. Milo came through his treatment wonderfully. He was with us for four months before we felt he was a healthy dog and ready for adoption.   Milo went to his new home in February, 2010.  His new owner is a lover of Bassets and a perfect match.   The Milo Fund is for our rescued dogs in need of extensive medical care and long term care.  Please visit the Happy Wags page to read Milo's story
